I cannot get enough great books and information about the early Americans, white, native or otherwise. Thom's books are like Eckert's in substance and historical detail and usually follow along with a map to get the feel of where the story is playing out. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

I have read this book several times, and the last time I discovered that adding it to my kindle books enhanced the story, allowing me to set the font one size larger than the book print, giving me better contrast and cutting my read time by a good 40 percent or more. There is little else that I could add here except that the book is among eight Kenneth Roberts' books detailing in novel form the many battles, significant suffering and great sacrifices made by those fighting the Revolutionary War. The imagery of the novel takes you, personally, to the fields, swamps, forts and battle lines that few history books can match. Thom and Roberts' tenacity and vocabulary of the times, along with in-depth research, have painted clear and accurate pictures of our country's colorful and varied history, especially those characters whose energy and skills shaped the future that we cherish today!

This was my second time reading this book, liked it every bit as much of not more. Always have enjoyed Thom’s writing. The Clarks were an amazing family and so little is written of them compared to other well known personages and families of the late 1700s to the early 1800s when our country fought for independence and began the great expansion into the west. It’s a novel but the facts are all there. Highly recommended.
Worth every penny and every minute.. This started out rather boring for this author, and thinking I was going to be disappointed compared to the previous book by him. However, the more I read the more I was spellbound to keep reading. I spent several nights sitting up way too late, just to see the next "bend in the road"..or the next character to be introduced! Before the book was finished, I felt as if I too had been on those long , dangerous adventures with WIlliam and the battles along side George! What a great story teller is James Alexander Thom!!! I only wish I had bought the hard back copy to keep in my growing library!
I have read this book twice over the years and totally enjoyed it. So, I purchased it for my son for Christmas. He is now enjoying it. Thom writes the best books about our Native Americans as well as this book regarding the History of our Country when it was first forming. An early look at our government as well. Not very pretty.
I have read just about every book that my public library has in their ebook collection by James Alexander Thom. The books are long, but the stories are so engaging that I find it difficult to put the book down. It is like the characters in his books are calling me to come join them in whatever adventure they are involved in.
I am seventy years now. College classes in early American History. This book has made a tremendous impact on my understanding of the struggles and accomplishments these early explorer's endured to make this great America that we live in. Thank you Mr. Thom
I loved this book .don't let the length of this book scare you. It will keep your attention and interest on every page. It's told by the mother of the Famous William Clark. As in Lewis and Clark. She tells the story of her 10 children. I learned more from this book than I did from any history book
