Sharpe Siege Richard Sharpe and the Winter Campaign 1814 #20 Bernard Cornwell Books Reviews
I love this series. Nearing the end. I'll be sad when I finish.
I may have to reread the series all over again.
Yet another winner from Cornwell. Color, great action and engaging characters. I am so sorry this series has finished--- like reading your last Sherlock Holmes tale.
I read this series, start to finish. Chronological order. Every book is excellent . the story in full is excellent.
All winter, rainy days, fireplace, coffee, cookies. Great time spent with wonderful characters, good and bad.
The stories built into history lessons were just masterful.
Sorry, Do to so many read, I am copying one review for all. Singularly or Collectively, you can not go wrong with Bernard Cornwell.
I discovered Richard Sharpe while stuck in a hotel many years ago. When I found out the series was available from Netflix, I had my own Sharpeathon. More than once. With the faces of Sharpe and Harper in my mind, the enjoyment of both the books and the audio was enhanced.
I recommend the SHARPE Series to anyone who likes this historical period. The fictional characters are so well written into the actual historical narrative that is it doesn't require suspension of belief.
I found this one of my most enjoyable in the series I think because it is now taking place on French soil with the many factions involved as well. The Doucos character is someone you can’t help but love seeing foiled once again.
This is something like the tenth Sharpe story. Most of them are full length novels and most of them are set during the Peninsula War of Wellington against a variety of Napoleon's occupying armies. So if you are reading them in order - as you should - you must already be fond of these books.
You will know the continuing themes of these books. You will know Cornwell's virtues as a story teller. All you need to know from me is - is this one of the better ones in the series or one of the weaker ones. I'm happy to report that this is indeed an excellent tale.
Bernard Cornwell is one of my favorite authors, and he brings history to life in his "Sharp" series. These days it is common to see the phrase "Based on a true event" tossed around lightly. I sometimes think if a story takes place in an existing country, it can be labeled as such, regardless of how ridiculous it might actually be. The Sharp tales take slight liberties with history, but are based on story lines obviously carefully researched, and their background is explained by the author in detail. Sharp is an excellent "hero", with character flaws especially common in his era, but at the core is a true patriot, if sometimes a "back handed" one.
I love all of the Richard Sharpe books. I hate having to search for the chronological order of the books, so I'm providing it here so people don't have to search.
